Google News is aggregated from Thousands of News Sources

Google provides a front page that has 200-word (or so) previews of each news item, with links to the full news. This enables readers to decide which news they want to read and go to the source for news they are interested in. Google covers news from sources in many languages, and typically covers news during the past 30 days.
Google had to face copyright infringement notices and governmental opposition for its news coverage. If has been criticized for including news from a hate site, faced copyright infringement suits from agencies such as Agence France Presse and invited Chinese government wrath for including news from sources that are censored in that country. When Google responded to the last issue by blacklisting the censored websites, it invited criticism for not including the news.
Yet it has managed to survive all these and continues to be a widely used news service. Readers can subscribe for news alerts on particular topics, or subscribe to RSS feeds. Readers can search for news based on publication date, and sort them by publication date. Historical archives of news going back to over 200 years are also available to readers.
Timeline views are available and readers can select the years of the news they want to focus upon. Google has also scanned newspapers, sometimes going back to the original publication date as in the case of New York Times that started in 1851.
The Google News front page displays news selected by a Google algorithm and not by humans. However, human inputs come into the picture when Google selects the sources from which to access the news (and it is this that has led to many controversies both on the grounds of inclusion and exclusion). The algorithm determines the rankings for the news and thus the order in which they are displayed. Considering the care Google takes to authenticate news sources, you can be reasonably certain that when you go into the details, you will be landing at authentic sources.
While the complete list of sources used by Google News is known only to Google, certain sources are clearly identifiable. These include New York Times, Washington Post, BBC News, Xinhua, Times of India, CNN, ABC News and Forbes.
